People love to be entertained by fantastic hypnotists who have their subjects dancing like the “Chippendales” or singing like Madonna. We watch people bark like dogs and crawl like babies. The fun things that people will do on stage under hypnosis never seem to disappoint audiences. The shows are fun.
Well, that was until I went to a seminar where it was no longer fun.
After the attendees of this particular “wealth” seminar had been hypnotized several times in previous seminars by this hypnotist, I witnessed him stand in front of the audience and auction off a hundred dollar bill ($ 100.00) and win $ 50,000, 00!
Yes, my zeros are correct. . . Fifty thousand dollars for a hundred dollar bill.
Who would do something so ridiculous? Who would pay $ 50,000.00 for a hundred dollar bill?
Could it be, just maybe? . . someone who was “hypnotized” and fed the correct hypnotic sentences?
Hmm!
“We’re going to play a game now, and this is how the game goes.” The hypnotist began.
“I’m going to offer this one hundred dollar bill to the highest bidder. But the problem is this. The two highest bidders have to pay, but only the highest bidder receives the hundred dollar bill.”
What what? Who would go for something so ridiculous? Are you saying that if I am the second highest bidder, I have to pay and receive absolutely nothing?
Oh yeah! This is how the game goes!
Hmm!
I remember yelling something like “$ 10.00!” Then I heard “$ 500.00!”
The voice in my head screamed: People! Hello! It’s a hundred dollar bill! What are you doing?
Then I leaned back and watched the scene unfold.
The auction was getting higher and higher. The auctioneer / hypnotist actually had to stop the auction because it got too out of control.
All I can tell you is that this auctioneer / hypnotist made $ 50,000.00 on his hundred dollar bill. . . that’s where the bidding stopped. (Oh! By the way … The Auctioneer / Mesmer was kind enough to give the two highest bidders $ 100.00 after demanding that they pay!)
Hmm!
I know you’re saying, “No, Karen! He made over $ 50,000.00 … Remember how much two people had to pay!”
I know. I’m pretty good at math. I said you only won $ 50,000.00 because I suspect, just maybe, one of those highest bidders was a plant. Just maybe. . . Although I can’t be sure. I repeatedly asked myself, “Why do the two (2) highest bidders in the game have to pay?”
Hmm!
To understand how this hypnotist could pull off this scam, I suggest you read Robert B. Cialdini’s book, Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion.
Having the same goal as me, diluting the effectiveness of the scammer’s poisonous poison, one of the things Robert Cialdini brilliantly explains is how people can be fooled in auction settings.
Cialdini tells a true story of how even a top chain executive was beaten up at an auction for the movie, “Poseidon’s Adventure,” and after catching his breath, this top executive made the statement that his chain would never be back. Get into an auction situation.
Now, let me test your computer skills.
Add this up for me:
A suitable auction environment for a scam

A crowded audience that was mesmerized by the Auctioneer / Mesmer. . .
What do you get?
Hmm!
All I can say is that the Auctioneer / Mesmer DROPPED at least $ 50,000.00 on his hundred dollar bill!
Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion is definitely a book that scammers and con artists don’t want you to read. This book will definitely give you power over them!
Self-empowerment is the key to never being scammed again!
