Jackson Senyonga – Background

Jackson Senyonga, senior pastor and founder of Christian Life Ministries, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping orphans and widows in Uganda, has witnessed the power of God’s transformation in his nation. He has been a catalyst in bringing together leaders of all denominations in cities across the United States, as well as in many other nations. His ideas on principles for transformation, prayer and unity have been a valuable resource and have been adapted and applied in different cities. But it was not always like this.

Jackson Senyonga was born and raised in Uganda. This is part of the reason he has dedicated so much of himself to helping the nation he originally called home.

Jackson Senyonga was born in Kittuntu, but his actual date of birth or even his year of birth are unknown to everyone. When he was born, nobody wrote it. As a sickly baby, his mother did not expect him to live. His mother abandoned what she thought was his dying baby, leaving him with his aunt, who volunteered to care for him in his final days. To everyone’s surprise, he survived. Considering the conditions, he turned out to be as healthy a boy as could be expected. Knowing what we now know about Jackson Senyonga’s life and all that he has accomplished, it is strongly believed that God was involved in his survival.

His mother was never around during his childhood or adolescence. It was his aunt who raised him. His father was more concerned with his occupation as a coffee farmer than with his role as his father and was not a part of his life during his childhood and adolescence.

As a teenager, he witnessed the war and anguish of Idi Amin’s dictatorship. During this time, it was common to hear gunshots throughout the cities. After his father did not return home for six days, a group of people came to the door of his aunt’s house crying; they spilled the news of the death of Jackson Senyonga’s father. Although he was not especially close to his father, this news was devastating for the teenager.

Upon news of this death, Jackson Senyonga’s mother again paid her respects. She had high hopes of reestablishing a bond with his mother, but her heart was broken when she left without him. He found himself feeling lonely and orphaned by the events that transpired in just a few short weeks. He was very grateful to have his aunt in his life, but he still felt an unattainable need to have a relationship with his birth parents.

During this fragile time, Jackson Senyonga felt hopeless. He seriously considered taking his own life, thinking to himself that he had nothing on Earth to live for. He had planned his death and was counting the days; then something happened that changed his perspective.

His brother, Paul, brought him good news. Jackson Senyonga was accepted to attend Kampala Secondary School. Considering that he thought that acceptance in this school was unattainable, this news filled him with hope and joy. Once again, it seemed that God had intervened to indicate to Jackson Senyonga that he had great plans for his life.

Jackson Senyonga headed to Kampala to receive his education at Kampala High School. There, he met so many things that he had not even imagined. The school filled his head with great knowledge, while the city filled his eyes with magical spectacles, including electrical devices and motorized vehicles. He was introduced to this fantastic emotion: hope.

Being that Jackson Senyonga was in a new place and experiencing new things, he felt a bit alienated. Then he met Moses, and the two boys became instant friends. The two children laughed and played; the naughty couple had a good time.

One weekend, Moises left town. When he returned to Kampala, there was something different about him. He informed Jackson Senyonga that he had given his life to Jesus Christ. It took weeks for Moses to convince Jackson Senyonga to accompany him on a trip to church. Finally, Jackson Senyonga agreed to give him a chance.

When the couple arrived at the Redeemed Church of Christ, Jackson Senyonga was less impressed. It was a small building made of mud walls and a tin roof. It housed only about 150 people.

However, the architectural disappointment of the church was quickly forgotten when Jackson Senonga entered the doors. The small church was full of people eager to meet him. These people were kind and genuine. He had never felt so much love.

He returned to church the following week. After hearing a message that seemed designed for him personally, he gave himself to the Lord. Suddenly, all the pain and despair that he had carried with him since his youth was gone. He completely fell in love and longed to learn all he could about Jesus Christ. He was changed.

He continued to grow in his relationship with God and even began to speak publicly about this great news. One day after a Saturday service at his church, Jackson Senyonga spoke of what happened when he preached at a new church far from Kampala. After the service, a strikingly beautiful young woman approached him to introduce herself. She informed him that she enjoyed her witness and asked if he would be interested in her joining her team to plant churches across the country.

The two became great friends. Jackson Senyonga was impressed by her beauty, her good heart, and her impeccable singing skills. After about four years, he asked Eve to become his wife, and eventually the couple married. Now, two decades later, the two are still going strong and enjoying sharing God’s word with their three children, Elizabeth, Joshua and Jackie.
