Renault’s invincible Indian, ‘Duster’

No one in India would have thought that after having such a disastrous experience with Logan, Renault could establish itself in our Indian car market. Renault changed its strategy and did a lot of research before re-entering our market knowing that it could be its last chance to succeed. This time things worked and worked brilliantly for Renault and its fortunes suddenly changed in India with the launch of its compact SUV, Duster. The term ‘compact SUV’ was never used much in our market, but since Duster came along, it has become one of the most popular car segments in India. All automakers are now targeting this segment, including Renault’s alliance in India, Nissan.

Renault has used two different engines in the Duster; one each for gasoline and diesel. The diesel engine is available in two states targeting different buyer segments. The Duster petrol engine is a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine that generates a maximum power of 106 hp at 5850 rpm with a torque of 145 Nm at 3750 rpm.

The second unit is its popular 1.5-liter 4-cylinder DOHC engine that produces 85 hp of power at 3750 rpm with a maximum torque output of 200 NM at 1900 rpm, which translates into good fuel economy. This engine shares its five-speed manual gearbox with the gasoline engine.

The second state of this engine produces a little more power and torques, which translates into better performance when driving on roads. It generates a maximum power of 110 hp at 3900 rpm, while it has a torque output of 248 Nm that comes a bit late at 2300 rpm. This engine is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox.

Two-tone interiors with spacious cab add to the car’s superior appeal. To make you feel like you’ve invested in the right car, Renault has added many features to this car such as keyless entry, power windows, power steering and heated air conditioning, power liftgate, 2 DIN music system, Bluetooth and steering mounted audio and phone controls. The top model also comes with premium features like rear air conditioning vents, parking sensors, lumbar support for the driver’s seat height, dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, and brake assist.

The Renault Duster handles like any other sedan in city traffic, giving it an added edge over other heavy-duty SUVs. Plus, you get more space for the price of any premium midsize sedan, making this a more practical offering. The car is in a great run since its launch and despite the entry of new rivals into the market, the car is still quite dominant in its segment. Reviews of the Renault Duster also show that it is the best compact SUV ever launched in India.

The Renault Duster’s price range also contributes to its great value for money. The price of its petrol version starts at INR 7.99 lakhs, while the top model of its diesel version will cost you around INR 12.18 lakhs in Delhi (ex-showroom).
