VW Campervan Rental: Why the T25?

There’s no denying that a well-maintained split screen or bay caravan is perhaps the most romantic option, but there’s something about the Type 25, T25 or ‘wedge’ that has earned it its own cult status. Some may say it’s due to cost, with bays in good condition topping out at the £10k mark and splits can go up to double that. Though with prices for T25 converted quality creeping up, that may no longer be the case.

We think there’s more to it than that… maybe it’s better to start at the beginning.

Introduced in 1979 as a replacement for the bay window, the T25 retained the classic overall design and would become the last of Volkswagen’s rear-engined vans. Launched with the same air-cooled four-cylinder engine that had powered previous VW trucks, in three years they were to give way to more powerful water-cooled four-cylinder units to complement the already optional inline-four diesel options. While water-cooled engines may not appeal to the air-cooled fraternity, they tend to be more powerful and still retain the same distinctive VW noise.

Larger than previous trucks, the T25 is no taller than the cab that came before it, though it is 5 inches longer and 2.5 inches wider. This increased space made it more practical, though not more difficult to drive, thanks to greater visibility in all directions. Perhaps the biggest change in terms of dimensions was the lowering of the rear deck by 5.7 inches and the movement of the spare wheel from inside the vehicle to below the front of the cab. The combination resulted in more usable internal space, something that RV conversion companies soon took full advantage of.

Volkswagen also made improvements to the ride and handling with the addition of coil springs and telescopic dampers throughout. Like today’s production cars, this development also meant that the turning radius was reduced.

Production of the T25 finally ceased in 1992, where it gave way to the T4 with Volkswagen’s new front-engine layout van steering.

But what does all this mean for you and me?

Well, from our point of view, the Type 25 has well-deserved classic status in terms of looks and heritage. A status that cleverly hides a vehicle that is much more modern and easier to live with. Through a combination of its iconic looks, supple engines, upgraded suspension, and increased internal space, we think the T25 truly is the ideal choice for classic VW camping.

Why not find out for yourself just how versatile these vehicles are and we guarantee you’ll make new friends along the way.
