Wild cats: how to help wild cats

Wild cat colonies are establishing themselves in many communities around the world. In fact, of the roughly 146 million cats in North America, roughly half of these felines are wild or homeless. Although these homeless felines can survive on their own for a short period of time, they always need help. If you want to help the wild cats in your community but are not sure how, consider the following options to get started.

Contact a local rescue organization

You can help homeless cats in your community by contacting a local feline rescue group to notify them that there are stray cats in your neighborhood. Make sure the group you are contacting is willing to work with the wild cats you are trying to help, as opposed to some humane societies or shelters that immediately sixteen years old and will euthanize the wild cats they bring in.

Unfortunately, many shelters and pounds in North America are forced to euthanize cats for adoption to make room for other cats in their shelter. About 70% of all cats that enter shelters die there, and almost 100% of feral cats are immediately euthanized.

Spay / neuter and vaccination

The number one cause of the high population of homeless cats is the lack of spayed and neutered cats. In fact, a study by the Feral Cat Spay / Neuter Project has revealed that only 2% of free-roaming cats are spayed or neutered, leading to 147 million kittens being born to free-roaming cats each year. To reduce these populations, it is important that cats, especially homeless cats, are modified. That is why many rescue groups are trying to implement Trap, Neuter and Return programs in their communities.

To make sure your cat doesn’t contribute to the increasing population of homeless cats, be sure to spay or neuter him. You will also want to keep your cat safe from illness by making sure he is up to date on all vaccinations. Even if you have an indoor cat, there is always a chance of escape, so be sure to keep your kitty safe.

Volunteer in their efforts

If you are extremely dedicated to helping stray and stray cats, consider volunteering with your local feline rescue organization. Some organizations need help directly in their shelters, whether you can clean the floors and walls, feed the cats in the shelter, or help cut some claws, there is always something to do.

Additionally, many organizations are active throughout your community, especially with feeding stations for feral cats. These stations are often set up in a safe place where they allow homeless cats to rest and eat. Volunteers can be asked to check certain feeding stations during the week to make sure cats have enough food, water, warm beds, and blankets.

Speak up and support cat groups around the world

Teach others about the value of cats whenever you get the chance. Cats, especially wild ones, have too few defenders and too many naysayers. Educate yourself on issues and add your voice to the conversation. The best way to find out is to research the work of other cat lovers and cat rescue organizations around the world. Check their websites, studies, and social media websites to see what’s going on in the world of cat rescue.

Show your concern

Don’t be afraid to write to your local, provincial / state or federal representatives about improving the statutes for the treatment of feral and feral cats. Especially do not hesitate to contact local authorities if you have witnessed someone mistreat or abuse a homeless cat (or any animal).

Regardless of which option you decide is right for you, any support you can provide to the feral cat population will be appreciated by both rescue organizations and the cats you have helped.
