Maintaining your large kitchen appliances will not only mean a longer life for the appliance, it can also be a great way to save money when it comes to paying your electric bill. Here are five helpful tips to reduce the time spent on these tasks.
refrigerators
Inside and out is equally important when it comes to cleaning refrigerators. Unless your refrigerator is a sealed unit, there will be coils in the back that will attract dirt and dust. Make sure you have casters on the base so you can easily pull out the cooler and clean the back just as easily as the front on a regular basis. Replace filters before the expiration date in case you forget when the time comes.
freezers
Not all freezers defrost automatically, especially older types. Regular thawing removes that crusty buildup that takes forever to thaw. Let the inside of the unit melt completely, remove the shelves, then clean all surfaces with a vinegar and water solution.
Thawing also gives you a chance to get rid of old food that shouldn’t be reheated or cooked. While freezers keep food for a relatively long time, there are limits. Follow the guide that comes with your freezer for the safe handling of frozen foods.
Dishwasher
Dishwashers and their dishes will benefit greatly from cleaning from the inside. Check the filter regularly and scrub. While it may seem like a waste of water and electricity, running an empty cycle from time to time will clean the internal workings and hoses, giving your wash cycles a better result.
ovens and stoves
Instant cleanups are faster and easier than trying to remove stuck-on grime. This is true for stoves and ovens. Make it a habit as part of your dishwashing routine. Remove the racks and shelves and scrub with a brush. For electric ovens, check elements and clean. For gas, make sure the jets are free of food.
wine coolers
Keep it clean inside and out with a simple regular cleaning. Remove the grids and scrub with a brush from time to time. Non-abrasive cleaners can be used inside and out or a solution of vinegar in water. If you have nasty stains or built-up grime, baking soda mixed to a paste with a little water is a much gentler way to remove grime than harsh chemicals.
By being diligent about cleaning your major appliances, you’re saving yourself a lot of scrubbing time if you let dirt spread and stick to surfaces. Appliances will have a longer lifespan if you maintain them carefully and overall running costs can be greatly reduced. Engines that have to work twice as hard to get past built on land will use more power.
