Are you respectful of the environment? Have you been looking for interesting and affordable eco tours to take on vacation? Want to have a green vacation for a change? I know exactly how you feel.
I have looked high and low for a vacation that encompasses my earth friendly lifestyle. Aside from pitching a tent and living off the land, it seemed like the chance of my vacation being in sync with my daily lifestyle was pretty slim on my budget.
In my search for eco-vacations that fit my criteria; budget, culture, unique outdoor experiences, exciting eco-tours and eco-lodges; I stumbled upon the small town of Kaikoura, in the South Island of New Zealand.
Green Community
The first thing that struck me about Kaikoura is that they have earned their Green Globe Benchmark certification. Obtaining this certification is not an easy task for a community. Indicates that the community has met a globally recognized standard for sustainable tourism. Kaikoura has achieved a 72% diversion rate of its landfill and is focused on 100% diversion. This small community celebrates its green lifestyle with events throughout the year.
Eco-Visits
Some companies offer eco tours that get you up close to marine life and there is an eco tour that takes you to the Puhi Peaks Nature Reserve. Imagine having seals playing at an arm’s length, swimming with wild dolphins or hiking for hours through the unparalleled beauty of the Seaward Kaikoura Range. The cost of the tours is extremely reasonable for what they offer. In addition, there is a Segwey rental shop that allows you to move around the city in an ecological way.
amazing outdoors
The backdrop of the Seaward Kaikoura Range when looking in and the ocean when looking out provides almost limitless opportunities to spend time outdoors. The list of activities includes deep-sea fishing, parasailing, hang gliding, whale watching from the air and on a catamaran, cave visits, rafting, alpine treks, and skydiving. There are few indoor activities for tourists in Kaikoura.
Culture
As with most of New Zealand, Kaikoura honors Maori history and culture. Museums pay homage to his Maori roots and whaling past. Maori crafts are sold in craft shops. Although tourism has brought commercialism to the area, you still experience a sense of discovery and wonder.
Lodging/Food
With a population of around 3,900, Kaikoura has a wide range of accommodation available. There are B&Bs, farm stays, boutique accommodation, campgrounds, hotels, and everything in between. No matter what kind of place you want to stay, it’s available in this friendly little town.
Since Kaikoura is a seaside fishing port, seafood restaurants abound. Having a truly fresh seafood dinner is an amazing experience and one to stay with. There are cafes, fine dining and casual restaurants serving excellent meals at decent prices. When you consider the size of the city of Kaikoura, the variety and number of establishments is staggering.
When you’re looking for a vacation destination, don’t overlook Kaikoura. It is a jewel set in the stunning seascape of the South Island, New Zealand.
