We’ve been through a recent period where it was considered acceptable to wear jeans, hoodies, and sloppy clothing every day. Women in the UK have forgotten how to dress and act like ladies. As much as I love kicking back in my boyfriend jeans and a hoodie on a Sunday afternoon, I still realize how important it is to dress up once in a while and not get carried away.
In the last two years this has been slowly changing. Women and girls have re-adopted the dress, not just for a night out on the town, but for everyday wear as well. The reintroduction of leggings/treggings/jeggings, etc. It has made it easier for women who didn’t feel quite confident about showing their legs during the day, to wear a dress but still have that extra cover. Leggings tend to enhance a dress, but leggings make the look more casual, making dresses a great everyday staple.
It has also become acceptable to wear whatever you want on your feet with a dress, while the fancy heel tended to be the go-to shoe in the past. Today, women combine their casual dresses with converse, motorcycle boots, ankle boots, wellies, etc. The list is endless. The expansion of the range of shoe styles that are considered socially acceptable to wear with dresses has made the dress a more practical daytime outfit.
What kind of dresses should we wear during the day? The answer is; whatever you feel comfortable with! There’s no reason you can’t dress up in a pretty, sparkly evening gown with a pair of thick, chunky boots and thick stockings. Or make a winter-appropriate floral maxi dress with a scarf and chunky granny jumper.
The most common dress to wear with a pair of leggings is the simple jersey dress. Lightweight, cheap, and requiring almost no ironing, it’s imperative for all women to have a few in their wardrobes for daytime wear. Whether it’s plain or patterned with this season’s polka dots or animal prints, you really can’t go wrong.
Circle skirt skater dresses from the 1960s have recently become popular again, giving the traditional knit dress shape more edge. Wear it with heels or Converse and long socks, the skater dress is the ultimate casual dress of the moment. Also popular in bright and bold Jewel colours, such as emerald green or mustard, the casual skater dress guarantees the wow factor during the day.
There is no rule that says you have to wear a particular dress style/pattern/fabric during the day to look glamorous yet casual. Throw on a dress with the shoes that make you look great but also make you comfortable to face the day ahead, and bring a little old-fashioned glam into the week ahead!
