The new Samsung Galaxy S is every inch of the perfect smartphone. With the excellent Android 2.1 operating system, the phone will win a lot of applause thanks to its excellent quality screen.
Due to its very large screen, the Samsung Galaxy S measures slightly more than some of its counterparts, which is to be expected. The height and width measurements are 122.4 x 64.2 mm. Even though these are a touch on the large size, the overall aesthetic is helped by the fact that the phones are actually one of the slimmest available at just 9.9mm. The display itself uses the latest Super AMOLED technology not only to help achieve the ultra-slim profile, but also to give color reproduction a richness rarely found on mobile devices, thanks to the lack of backlighting. This also helps the screen produce wider viewing angles. Super AMOLED combines the two layers found in other devices into a single sheet, reducing depth and giving better results. The phone weighs just 121 grams, which is surprisingly light for such a high-spec model, however this is due to the large amount of lightweight plastic used in its construction. The actual design of the phone is very simple, quite similar to that of Apple’s iPhone. Physical buttons are kept to a minimum and the screen dominates the front of the phone. The rear panel houses the phones camera and is finished with numerous black dots that break up the black plastic finish quite well.
The battery life of the Samsung Galaxy S is perhaps a bit less than you might expect, with the massive screen dramatically draining on resources, however you can expect 1.5-2 days with normal use. This won’t seem like a big deal to many people, as most phones are routinely charged on a daily basis. The actual quality of the call on the phone is very high, the voices are full without the tone found in many models. If you want to use your phone in conjunction with a wireless headset, the Galaxy S features the latest Bluetooth 3.0 technology. Where this differs from the widely available 2.1 is in the department of data transfer speed, so sending files using this format is vastly improved. Since modern phones are used for both SMS text messaging and making calls, Samsung’s Swype text input method makes the process much faster. Using an ingenious text recognition system, instead of individually pressing each character you need, you can simply move your finger across the screen and the phone predicts the required word. It’s easy to be skeptical of this method, but in testing the phone was correct 95% of the time.
The Samsung Galaxy S really excels in every department, but especially when it comes to its large screen and excellent ease of use. The phone rightly deserves to compete with the best smartphones available today.
